Tom Sigurdsson shook Mattias’ hand. He was surprised by the sharp and proud look in the young officer’s eyes as he said goodbye and jumped into the taxi. Out of curiosity, Tom bent down to see if it was the taxi driver from last night’s visit to Varg Veum’s bar at Scandic, but this time it was a young man behind the wheel. Mattias was on his way to take care of his family, but there was no doubt about him returning to the job as soon as his personal situation allowed. Tom would have done the same. If not for the sake of his children, then for Viveca’s sake. Her decisive, brown eyes could make him do anything. And he loved his boys more than anything in the world. He remembered that one time he was stationed in Malexander after the infamous police murder that had taken place there. Viveca had been truly worried that time. Their youngest boy had only been a couple of months old back then. Tom had never been scared, but he understood where Viveca’s reaction had come from. Also, she hadn’t been allowed to call him for three days. Just as he hadn’t been allowed to call her. He watched Mattias drive off in the taxi, which meant Tom was on the job. Now he was officially an officer stationed on board Idun. He turned around and walked towards the gangway with a happy smile on his face. The mountains looked absolutely stunning and later that afternoon, they would leave the fjord and head out to sea. It was all amazing.

‘Hi, Dennis! I’m on board the ship now,’ he said calmly. He had walked up on deck and was leaning against the inflatable rubber boat used for polar expeditions. He hoped they would let him try it once they got up to Svalbard.

‘Great, if you need to reach me when you’re in a dead spot, don’t hesitate to use the satellite phone. After all, this is a murder investigation.’

‘I know,’ Tom said. ‘How are you doing with that?’ he wondered and realised it was almost lunch time.

‘Stig and I are the only ones here. Helene’s on sick leave, and Sandra’s gone home to get some rest.’

‘Rest? Why?’

‘She’s been tired lately, that’s all. But she’ll be back again tomorrow.’

‘I guess it’s that boyfriend of hers keeping her awake,’ Tom said.

‘What boyfriend? Didn’t she kick him out straight away?’

‘I don’t know. I was sure I saw them hand in hand on their way to the grocery store. I picked up some groceries in Kungshamn before heading home to Viveca and the kids after the interrogations.’

Dennis felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. Had Sandra lied to him? Or maybe he had nothing to do with why she was tired.

‘Don’t worry, though,’ Tom said. ‘I’ve worked with Rickard. He’s not the type who sticks to one woman. He’ll buzz onto the next flower soon. Like a bumblebee.’

‘But didn’t he have a girlfriend in Umeå? Didn’t they live together?’

‘Yes, they lived together.
